Arthur J. Berthold, 86, loving husband of Ruth Kaufman Berthold, died Thursday, April 25, 2013 after a valiant fight against glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. Arthur and Ruth had resided in Old Tappan, NJ for 54 years before relocating to Fort Worth, TX to be close to their only son and daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. Mr. Berthold, son of Anna and Arno Berthold, spent the early years of his life in Dumont, NJ. He was a member of the great Dumont High School basketball team of 1943-44 and was inducted into the Dumont High School Sports Hall of Fame. Drafted by the U.S. Army after completion of his junior year, Artie served in combat with the 43rd Infantry Division in New Guinea and the Philippines and later, as part of the allied forces occupying Japan. Corporal Berthold was decorated for his service, which included the Bronze Star, the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. After the war Artie returned home to complete high school and then attended Syracuse University under the G.I. Bill where he met his life-long sweetheart, fellow Army veteran Ruth Kaufman, RN. There he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and received his Baccalaureate in history. He later received a Master's in Education from New York University. Mr. Berthold was an exemplary and devoted teacher, coach and administrator for 37 years in Marlboro, NY, Harrington Park, NJ, and Suffern, NY. He retired in 1988, but until his death, frequently shared the many joyous memories of his life as an educator, often recalling his former students by name. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth, son David and daughter-in-law Nancy, his grandchildren, David A.J., Anna, Michael, and Madeline, his two sisters, Louise O'Brien and Helen Berthold, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
