Barbara Chittum, 82, of Bergenfield, New Jersey passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023. Barbara was born in North Bergen, New Jersey on August 8, 1941. She was a graduate of Syracuse University, where she met her husband Richard Chittum. They were married on June 20, 1964 in Fort Lee, NJ. They moved to their current home in Bergenfield, NJ in 1972.
In the course of her career she was a teacher, an admin, an accountant, a customer service rep for Lipton and always a trusted advisor. She loved words in every form which led to her becoming a part of the Bergenfield Library Board. Crosswords and books adorn her countertops and shelves. She and Rick supported charities with the most critical element, the human touch. They delivered meals, they worked breakfasts and events, and together they were always active doers. She maintained great friendships during her years playing in MahJong, Poker, Bowling and Bingo groups. An active member on her synagogue Caring committee, a past president of B’nai Brith Women, and so many meaningful events with Bergenfield Lions and other organizations in Bergen County.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Evelyn Brody. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years Richard Chittum, her children, David (and his wife Pamela) and Russell (and his ex-wife Sharona along with their 4 children the “grand kids” Rachel, Avraham, Benyamin and Akiva), as well as her Brother, J. Lewis Brody (and his wife Phyllis with their children Robyn, Lauren, and Seth.)
A loving mother and wife, a cherished friend whom all will miss, Barbara was a light in the room whenever she was present. A proud parent, who attended events and nurtured her children ceaselessly. A doting grandmother she couldn’t stop talking about the kids at every turn. Her memory lives on and she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
