Prof. Dorothy L. Rudy, 86, local retired English professor and poet, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2010. Mrs. Rudy is survived by her daughters, Dorothy E. Rudy, a paralegal at the Law Offices of Rosemarie Arnold in Fort Lee, NJ, and Willa C. Rudy, a special education teacher at the Whittier School in Teaneck, NJ. Mrs. Rudy is a Professor Emeritus of Montclair State University and is the author of four volumes of poetry: Voices Through Time and Distant Places, 1993; Psyche Afoot, 1978; Grace Notes, 1979; and the Quality of Small, 1971. She was the Centennial Poet at the Tenafly Centennial Gala and gives numerous readings and lectures on poetry and poets at the Tenafly, Fort Lee, Bergenfield and Leonia libraries. A Humanities Scholar for the New Jersey Council for the Arts, Mrs. Rudy is listed in Who's Who in the East, Poetry and Writers, Who's Who of American Women and others. At the N.J. Institute of Technology Annual Writers Conference in 1994, she received an award as an Outstanding Writer of New Jersey at the annual luncheon for her publication Voices. Never slowing down, Mrs. Rudy continued to teach for many years after her retirement from Montclair State as an adjunct professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her husband, Professor Emeritus, Deceased, Dr. Willis Rudy, was a history professor at FDU and both daughters graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Mrs. Rudy is also an avid horsewoman, having ridden every week at Nickel-O Farms in West Nyack, NY as recently as six weeks prior to her death. Both her daughters are accomplished equestrians and rode on the Fairleigh Dickinson University Equestrian Team. Mrs. Rudy was a caring person, devoted to family and friends, animals and the environment. She frequently donated to causes such as the Humane Society, local pet rescue organizations, Native American education, and veterans' organizations. Mrs. Rudy was also active in her church, the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Haworth, New Jersey. Viewing will be held on Friday, November 26, 2010 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave., Bergenfield, NJ. A memorial service and celebration of her life will take place at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Haworth, NJ, on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at 10:00 am.
