von der Schmidt, George 62, formerly of Bergenfield, NJ, now of Boston, MA passed away, on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 in his residence, of natural causes. He was pre-deceased by his Father, George in 1996, his Mother Rose in 1999, both of which he helped take care of before their deaths. He is survived by his elder sister, Susan, his twin brother Edward, his junior sisters, Deborah and Elise, his nephews Michael, Edward, Sean, Richie, Robert, Matthew, niece Katherine and grandnephews Michael and Max. He grew up in Bergenfield, NJ and was active in hobbies, sports and music. He was interested in modeling cars and planes, racing and flying them. Early on he became interested in fishing. While attending Bergenfield High School, he was very active in and a member of the percussion group of the renowned Bergenfield High School Marching Band, which led the "Macy's Day Parade" for many years including the years that George participated, 1971-1975. He graduated a National Honor Society Scholar in 1971. He attended College, first at Bethany College in W. Virginia and later at Jersey City College, New Jersey, majoring in Music. He was involved throughout High School, College and thereafter, in the Drum and Bugle Corp, starting first in the "Hawthorne Muchachos", later the "Hawthorne Caballeros" and also the "Bayonne Bridgemen". Throughout his life he taught and directed music. He studied percussion, "Vibraphones", with the acclaimed and renowned percussionist Mr. Lionel Hampton. Later in life, he developed an interest and business in computers, including website design. He was an active "Angler". Later in life when he was able, he enjoyed "fishing" on Cape Cod. He loved his Siberian Huskies, "Sasha" and "Teesha", that he had researched, before bringing to his family and sharing their beauty, joy and love with all of his family. He was kind, caring, loving and helpful to all. He was unselfish and enriched all of his family's lives. We all miss him so much already. Visiting at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Avenue, Bergenfield, NJ 07621 (201 384 0700), Thursday, 7-9pm. All will meet Friday, August 28th at Old South Church, Bergenfield, for the funeral service at 10am. Interment will follow in Old South Church Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with his mother and father. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to your favorite charity in George's name.
