Helen A. Cavallo

Helen Cavallo (nee Maher), age 97, of Chandler, Arizona, formerly of Bergenfield, passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by her family on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Born in West Point, New York on February 22, 1916, she was the youngest of nine children of Staff Sergeant Joseph Maher and his wife Ellen McCann. Mrs. Cavallo was a graduate of Highland Falls High School, Highland Falls, New York, Class of 1933, where she excelled in both academics and athletics. She was an active parishioner for more than 50 years of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Bergenfield and a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court 688. Mrs. Cavallo was an accomplished pianist who loved to play for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed travelling with her husband during their retirement years and entertaining her grandchildren with stories of her early life, her family and especially her Irish heritage. In her professional life, Mrs. Cavallo was a retail store executive and store manager of the Arnold Constable Department Store in Hackensack and Stern's (now Macy's) Department Store in West Orange. She was the loving wife of the late Frank Cavallo to whom she was married for over 69 years. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Libonati and her husband Richard of Ahwatukee, Arizona and two sons, Frank Cavallo Jr. and his wife Pamela of New Milford and Eugene Cavallo and his wife Teresa of Bergenfield. She leaves eight loving grandchildren and two great grandchildren to whom she was so special and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield on Monday, October 14th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Tuesday morning, October 15th at 10 am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Bergenfield, followed by internment at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Tenafly. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated.
