John H. Buffington, of Bergenfield, New Jersey died Tuesday, December 21, 2010. John was born in Glen Ridge N.J., March 10, 1926, to Emory and Doris Buffington. John graduated high school in 1943 and then served in the military towards the end of WW II in Saipan. After leaving the military service he graduated from Susquehanna University and became a teacher in Bergenfield N.J., and then an elementary school principal in Maywood New Jersey. He also attained a Masters degree from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education during this time. John retired in 1993 and began the next phase of his active life, which included volunteering at the Center for Food Action, Alternatives to Domestic Violence, and the Central Unitarian Church. John's many interests included family, photography, reading, the arts, and travel, and he was also a pretty good "handyman". He loved to tackle a good project! He was also known as a warm, caring, and compassionate person who was generous, along with his wife Betty, to many causes. John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty, their adult children Karen, Nancy, Doug, and Peter, along with grandchildren Meredith, Ariel, Mike, Erika, Alexa, Linda, and Madison, and great- grandchildren Abigail and Taylor. We will miss his warm smile and thoughtfulness. A memorial service will be held on January 29th at 1:00 PM at the Central Unitarian Church, 156 Forest Avenue, Paramus, N.J.
