John A. Rube, 87, on February 2, 2013 of Emerson formerly of Bergenfield. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was a lineman for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1986. He was a long time resident of Bergenfield until 2012. He attended St. John's School and was on the first football team (the "Mighty Mites") of Bergenfield High School's first ever graduation Class. He should have graduated in 1943 but lied about his age and enlisted in Navy. He served from December of 1942 to March of 1946 aboard the USS Kimberly, the USS William M. Wood and USS Silversides receiving the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, American Theater Medal and Victory Medal. He returned to his childhood home on Carnation Street and married his wife, the late Patricia Gavin Rube, who lived a couple of houses away. They married in 1950 and moved far away from Bergenfield (Hasbrouck Heights). John re-enlisted in 1951 and served on the USS Wasp. Upon his discharge, they moved back to Bergenfield. He was proud of his time in the submarine service during World War II and Korea and nothing pleased him more than to tell stories about his adventures. He loved going to Navy reunions and speaking to children in grade Schools. John was also a past Captain of the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps. and was an Exempt Member of Alert Fire Co. #1. He was a Life Member of Bergenfield Memorial Post #6467 VFW. John belonged to many bowling leagues and won numerous trophies as well as being a baseball umpire in his spare time. Predeceased by his wife, Patricia Gavin Rube and his son-in-law, John D. Kaberle, Jr., John is survived by his beloved daughters, Clare P. Kaberle and Jane (and her husband Robert) Fallon. Dear brother of Arlene Sposa. Loving uncle to William Sposa, Ellen Sposa-Morin, Pete Hartney, Patricia Byrne, Eileen Stanio and many nieces and nephews.He was special grandfather of Cinnamon Jane Kaberle. Memorial donations may be made to the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Visiting Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave. Bergenfield. All will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday at 10 AM for the Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Bergenfield at 11 AM. Interment George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
