Mary C. DeSteno

Mary C. DeSteno (nee Rufo) passed away February 19, 2025. She was born on August 13, 1927 to Italian immigrants Carmine and Louisa (nee Russo) in Pleasantville, New York. The oldest of four children, Mary is predeceased by her brothers Richard and Francis and survived by her "kid brother" Robert. 

Mary is predeceased by her parents Carmine and Louisa Rufo, her husband Ted, brothers, Richard and Francis Rufo, and grandson, Michael Minko. She is survived by her daughters Denise (James) Castner and Darlene (John) Minko, grandchildren Steven Rice and Marianne (Joseph) Romano, and great-grandchildren Joseph J. and Micaela Romano.

Mary commuted into Manhattan early in her career but spent most of her working years at Packard's in Hackensack. In September of 1950, she married the love of her life, Theodore "Ted" D. DeSteno in West New York. The two settled in Bergenfield where they raised their two daughters, Denise and Darlene. Mary would remain on Oak Street in Bergenfield until 2021. 

In her free time and retirement, Mary enjoyed spending her days gardening. She loved dancing the night away at gatherings and watching Wheel of Fortune at 7:30 pm. She adored cats, especially hers, Crystal. Mary and Ted loved to travel whether it be a quick overnight trip to Pennsylvania, a luau in Waikiki or a leap across the pond to Europe. 

Visiting Friday February 21, 2025 from 3-7PM at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave. Bergenfield. Funeral Service Saturday February 22, 2025 at 10AM at Riewerts Memorial Home. Interment to follow at Garden of Memories in Township of Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge.
