Mary Ellen Cunningham

Mary Ellen Cunningham (nee Mullen), 95, of Bergenfield passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. She was born September 13, 1922 in Easkey, County Sligo, Ireland. She is predeceased by her husband John in 1980, her parents Nora and John Mullen, and brothers John and Anthony Mullen. Mary immigrated to New York City in 1949 sponsored by her aunt and uncle. She began working immediately as a nanny and over the next 8 years took excellent care of many children in New York City and New York State never forgetting any of their names. In 1954, Mary proudly became a U.S. citizen. In 1956, she met her husband, John, at an Irish dance and they were married November 9, 1957. Mary's legacy will be her devotion to her family. Nothing brought her more satisfaction in life than to be a wife, mother, and grandmother. The accomplishments of her children and grandchildren brought her all the joy she desired. She will be remembered as thoughtful, generous, and most of all humble. She will be greatly missed by her family. Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Schimpf, and her husband, Andrew, and her son, Brian, and his wife, Mary Beth. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Margaret, Kathryn, Molly, and John. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 3 at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Avenue, Bergenfield. All will gather at the funeral home on Saturday at 8:30 AM for the Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church Bergenfield at 9:30 AM. Interment Hackensack Cemetery, Hackensack. In lieu of flowers donations to the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corp. would be greatly appreciated.
