Richard Lucena Lopez is the beloved son of Ricardo (d.) and Lucita Lopez. Rich was born on August 31, 1970 in New York City, where he spent his early childhood before moving to Jersey City. In 2004, he married and established a home with his family in Bergenfield.
Rich joined the Jersey City Medical Center's Emergency Medical Services Department as a Paramedic in 2002, and was promoted to the position of Tour Chief in 2007. In 2009, he received the Jersey City Police Department's Special Recognition Award and the Emergency Medical Services Department's highest honor—the Distinguished Service Medal—for conspicuous gallantry and courage at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in connection with his work at a shooting in which one police officer died and four were injured. That same year, he was named the Tour Chief of the Year.
Rich was a founding member of Emergency Medical Services Family Resources (http://emsfr.org), a non profit organization whose mission is to provide support to the EMS community nationwide. He attended St. Peter's Prep and St. Mary's High School, and graduated from Christ Hospital School of Nursing. He received his certification from St. Vincent's Paramedic Program. Rich is survived by his wife Ana and sons R.J. and Axl; mother Lucita; grandmother "Inay"; brother Jim and sister-in-law Sarah; niece Kayla Madison; nephews Eliut, J.R., and C.J.; and many, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
