Roy Van Tassel, Ringwood Police Chief (retired), 87, on March 23, 2008 of Ringwood. Born in Sterling, NY, he joined the Ringwood Police Department in 1954 and was promoted to Police Chief in 1958. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. Prior he was an Electrician in the Ringwood Iron Mines and the Soft Rubber Mill in Butler. An Army veteran of WW II, he was a member of the Int'l Assoc. of Chiefs of Police, the NJ Police Chiefs Assoc., member and Past President of the Passaic County Police Chiefs Assoc., the Fraternal Order of Police, the Passaic County Police Radio Assoc., Ringwood PBA Local 309, American Legion Post 0246, VFW Post 2906, Silentia Lodge #168, Butler, Adelphic Chapter #33 Royal Arch Masons, Melita Commandry #13, Boonton Lodge and the NRA. Beloved husband of Eleanor Van Tassel (nee Brustlin). Devoted father of Roy (and his wife Lorraine), Jr., Thomas F., Bruce (and his wife Laura) Van Tassel and Cynthia (and her husband Carl) Carlson, Loving grandfather of Roy, III, David V., Thomas F., Jr., Vincent A., Tracy E. and Bruce J. Van Tassel. Funeral service at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 So. Washington Ave. Bergenfield on Friday at 10AM by the Rev. Mark W. Ennis. Interment Midvale Cemetery, Wanaque. The family will receive friends on Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
