Salme Marie Parming

Salme-Marie Parming was born on March 28th, 1919, in Pärnu, Estonia. She was involved at an early age in the modern gymnastics movement in Estonia. She graduated from the Pärnu County Commercial Trade School and was hired by the Pärnu city government. She married Bernhard Parming of Tartu. The family fled Estonia during World War II and later lived in the US Zone of Germany. In 1949 the family immigrated to the United States living initially in Seabrook, NJ and later in New Milford. She was a gymnastic teacher and also taught gymnastics at the United Nations in New York. Salme Parming was employed for many years at GTE Sylvania and later at the Underwriter Printing and Publishing Company of Englewood. She is survived by a son Priit of Bergenfield, a daughter Anu-Irja of Hamilton and a daughter Kaja of Silver Spring, MD. Her husband Bernhard and younger Tönu passed away previously. Salme Parming suffered a stroke and was under nursing home care in Lincoln Park where she passed away on September 26th, 2013. The viewing will be held at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield on Thursday evening, October 3rd from 7-9 PM. Burial will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton, New Jersey, on Friday, October 4th at 12:00 noon.
