William H. Collins

William H. Collins on September 4, 2013 of Dumont. Born on December 19, 1924, William H. Collins was born into a coal miners family in Clinton, Indiana. Early in his youth he left high school and joined the Army Air Corps to do his part when his country needed him the most. The job he performed was very critical to the war effort as a mechanic on B-24 bombers. Stationed in Texas for his tour of duty, he worked diligently and with a purpose on these aircraft to keep them airworthy so the flight crews could be trained for duties at the war front. In 1943 he went on a blind date with a young woman, Selma C. Neumann, who after 5 years became Mrs. William H. Collins. During the 65 years of marriage they had 5 children Eileen( 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren), Bill( one grandchild), Joe, David(one grandchild) and Marie(two grandchildren). Pop was a hard worker as a draftsman for the Richmond Fireproof Door Company in New York City, and a loving father in Dumont, NJ. He worked hard to support his family and enjoyed life even harder. Pop enjoyed wood working, hunting, fishing, camping, slow walks in the woods with the family and picking wild apples and grapes for his family to enjoy. Pop was known by many as a kind, selfless person who would take the shirt off his back if you asked him. As a family man he would try his hardest to make sure his family experienced life to its fullest. Each year we would all go someplace where we all could enjoy nature and life together. In his later years he used his wood working skills to make furniture and toys for anyone, sharing a small piece of himself with each person who received these precious gifts. Pop will be celebrated at the Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Avenue, Bergenfield, NJ from 4:00 to 8:00pm Friday, September 6th. On Saturday, September 7th at 10:00 AM there will be a short service followed by pops interment at George Washington Memorial Park.
